Pain: The Resident’s Perspective
In this DVD, residents talk directly to the camera explaining how pain has destroyed their quality of life. Their comments include: “Sometimes it’s so bad, I hear my self shouting out.” “Tears just keep rolling down my face, I never thought I would cry from pain.” “The pain makes it so I can’t sleep or eat.” “When I am in pain I don’t want to see anyone or do anything.”
With an increased awareness of the impact of pain on the physical, emotional and functional well-being of residents, this DVD reminds those working with the elderly how important it is to recognize ,report and respond to pain. For residents who are not able to or who do not verbalize their pain, staff should look for changes in sleep patterns, depression, anxiety, agitation, decline in functional status and loss of appetite. The first step in addressing pain is to make sure your staff listens to residents and understands the debilitating nature of pain.
This DVD is appropriate for home health aides and nursing staff in long-term care, assisted living and adult day care programs as well as for all students training to work with the elderly.
