Elder Abuse: Abusive Verbal Interactions
Resident abuse includes not only physical abuse but also verbal abuse. Critical outburst, impatience, sarcasm, and negativity are devastating and destructive to the well being of the resident. In this DVD. Dr. Stevens guides nursing assistants to provide examples of what should be considered as verbal abuse.
The following situations are described as unacceptable in caring for a resident: using a threatening, judgmental or angry tone of voice; ridiculing a resident; using negative and critical language; and not responding to a resident. Positive communication contributes to quality of life, “Think of how you would feel, think of their feelings,” says one nursing assistant.
