Resident Safety: Tips for the GNA
This DVD addresses safety issues in long term care, providing tips from all members of the health care team. Interviews, interactive discussion, and patient vignettes are used to address key safety issues. At this long term care facility, all residents get evaluated upon admission by a physical therapist to determine if they are a fall risk. Knowing what a resident can and can no longer do independently and safely is vital information for the team. Knowing what assistive devices are recommended and making sure they are accessible is essential.
Safety tips provided by nursing assistants include: making sure new residents are frequently oriented; having special safety measures in place for confused residents; making sure residents are wearing prescribed eye glasses and hearing aids; arranging residents’ rooms so that everything is in easy reach; making sure obstacles such as additional assistive devices are not obstructive; and knowing if a resident’s medication has been changed. Safety issues are important for all staff working in long term care and assisted living and for students training to work with the elderly.
