Conflict: Team Confrontations and Negative Staff Behaviors
Nursing homes, just like any work environment are susceptible to staff conflict. Nursing assistants report on situations in which there are conflicts with supervisors, co-workers, family members and residents. News of these conflicts rapidly spread through the nursing home, creating tensions and an unhealthy work atmosphere.
In this DVD, nursing staff at a long term care facility, attend a special meeting with Dr. Georgia Stevens to examine why team confrontations and negative staff behaviors happen.
Some of the situations identified are: critical comments made by a nursing assistant about a co-worker’s care of residents; criticism of care by a family member; critical comments made by residents; unwillingness of a nursing assistant or other staff member to be helpful; supervisor’s lack of support; and poor communication by a supervisor.
After identifying triggers for negative staff behavior, Dr. Stevens leads the team in a discussion to address ways to minimize these problems. Everyone agrees that differences between staff should not be sorted out in front of residents or residents’ families. However, it is important to address differences as soon as possible after the situation occurs. With immediate resolution, problems do not gain greater significance, which tends to happen with the passage of time. Staff also agree that conflicts must never interfere with the delivery of patient care or minimize quality of care. Conflict resolution techniques are discussed with specific suggestions for positive ways to let go of anger, frustration and other negative behaviors. Finally, staff need to know when to get outside help from another staff member or a supervisor to resolve a team or resident problem.
